One of two macaws stolen from Gazipur Safari Park in Sreepur has been recovered by the police, with law enforcement also arresting a suspect in this connection.
The bird was found at around 10pm on Saturday at the Tongi bird market area in Gazipur, Sreepur police station Sub-Inspector (SI) Nazmul Hasan confirmed on Sunday evening.
The other bird has died, and the police are conducting an operation to recover its body.
Earlier, on Friday night, two macaws were stolen from the safari park after the net of the bird enclosure was cut.
On Saturday, Wildlife Inspector Raju Ahmed filed a complaint with Sreepur police station, and the police launched an operation to recover the birds.
The arrested individual is Arif, 32, from Sreepur.
He was arrested on Sunday afternoon from the Indrapur area.
The police are continuing their search for his alleged accomplice, Zahid, 35, from the same area.
SI Nazmul said the complaint mentioned that sometime on Friday night, the net of the macaw enclosure at the park was cut, and two green-winged macaws were stolen.
The estimated market value of the two birds is around Tk8 lakh.
The employees responsible for the enclosure found the net cut and noticed that two birds were missing when they cleaned the area on Saturday morning.
He further said that with the help of information technology, one suspect was identified, and after gathering more information, the police, along with the park authorities, recovered one of the stolen Macaw birds from a bird-selling shop in the Tongi market area.
The bird had been sold for Tk40,000, according to the shopkeeper.
Arif will be sent to the Gazipur court on Monday.
Raju Ahmed, the wildlife inspector at the park, mentioned that the bird had been wrapped with Scotch tape around its beak when taken, causing it to become sick.
The bird is currently undergoing treatment.
The other bird has died, Raju said, adding that the police are conducting an operation to recover its body.
Sharmine Akter, the divisional forest officer (DFO) of Dhaka, said with the help of the Wildlife Crime Unit, the police conducted a raid in the Tongi market area and recovered the bird.
Regarding the theft of the macaws from the enclosure, an investigation committee will be formed.
They will look into whether there was any negligence or misconduct in the responsibilities.
Currently, there are 27 macaws in Gazipur Safari Park.
