A case has been filed against eight people over the beating death of Shamim Molla, a former student and Chhatra League leader of Jahangirnagar University in Savar, Dhaka.

Sudipta Shaheen, JU deputy registrar (Security-1), also accused 20-25 unidentified individuals in the case filed with Ashulia police station early Friday.

The eight accused are Md Rajon Mia (46th batch, Department of Government and Politics), Raju Ahmed (45th batch, same department), Mahmudul Hasan Raihan (50th batch, Department of English), Jubayer Ahmed (44th batch, Department of History), Hamidullah Salman (49th batch, Department of English), Atikuzzaman Atik (49th batch, Department of Management Studies), Sohag Mia (47th batch, Department of Computer Science and Engineering) and Ahsan Labib (49th batch, Department of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering).

Earlier, the JU administration suspended these eight students for their involvement in the killing, based on preliminary evidence.

According to the case statement, at about 5:50pm on Wednesday, a group of individuals attacked Shamim Molla near the Prantik Gate of JU. Upon learning about the incident, the university's proctorial team rescued him and brought him to the proctor’s office and the police were informed.

However, some individuals, without notifying the proctor's office, moved him to the security office. When the proctor became aware of this, he went there, locked the collapsible gate and dispersed the angry crowd. But some individuals, becoming agitated again, broke the collapsible gate, entered the establishment and assaulted him once more.

At around 7:30pm, the police arrived and said multiple cases had been filed against Shamim in the past. About 30 minutes later, he was turned over to the police. On the way to Ashulia police station, his condition deteriorated and he was taken to Gonoshasthaya Samaj Vittik Medical College Hospital.

There, at around 9pm, the on-duty doctor declared him dead.

Ashulia police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Abu Bakar Siddique said Shamim Molla, a former organizational secretary of the Chhatra League, had been assaulted by some outsiders and students of JU, calling the incident unfortunate.

The deceased, Shamim, was a student of the 39th batch of the university. There were accusations against him of attacking students on the premises of the vice chancellor’s residence on the night of July 15 during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
