A 55-year-old man reportedly died in the custody of members of the Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) while being interrogated in a vehicle on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway in Narayanganj on Sunday.
The deceased was Syed Nurul Karim, whom the DNC had arrested in the morning on a Dhaka-bound bus from Cox’s Bazar at the Shimrail intersection in Siddhirganj suspecting him as a drug smuggler.
Later, they picked him up in a vehicle. During interrogation, he died there.
The body was kept at the Khanpur 300-bed hospital morgue.
Assistant director of the DNC, Muhammad Rifat, said Nurul died from a stroke.
According to eyewitnesses, Kabir was arrested by DNC members, led by its Inspector Joynal Abedin, on a bus and picked up in a vehicle, with his hands tied.
They also gave Kabir a good beating, they said, adding that at one stage, he fell sick.
He was being taken to Pro-Active Medical College and Hospital but he died before reaching the hospital.
Meanwhile, DNC Inspector Joynal denied the allegation of beating Kabir.
