Public outcry ensues as Ragib Ali attends and funds jail super's farewell

Update : 20 Jul 2017, 08:56 PM
An incident where two inmates funded and attended the farewell ceremony of an outgoing jail super at Sylhet Central Jail has sparked public outcry from quarters both inside and outside the prison. The inmates in question are Ragib Ali, who has been sentenced to 14 years in jail in two separate cases, and Rafiqul Islam Fenu, who is also serving a jail sentence for several cases including a case filed under the Information and Communication Technology Act. According to jail sources, Ragib and Fenu, who have been living luxurious lives even inside the prison thanks to their wealth and power, jointly funded the whole programme while the latter performed a song in front of the audience during the event. Outgoing Jail Super Sagir Mia also received presents from the duo during his farewell. Newly appointed Senior Jail Super Abdul Jalil said he attended the programme after receiving an invite.

Asked whether the duo were present at the programme, he said: “I have only just joined here and am yet to undertake all responsibilities.” “I don’t know the people who were present at the programme. I don’t even know who is accused in which case,” the new jail super added. According to sources at the jail, Ragib Ali and his son Abdul Hai have been serving 14 and 16 years in jail respectively, in two separate cases filed for forging signatures and grabbing land of an endowment property of Tarapur Tea Estate in the district. A jail official, asking to remain anonymous, said Ragib Ali and his son had been living luxurious lives in the prison, breaching all rules and regulations since they started serving their jail terms. "It is as if they were still at home. They have been bringing food from home on a regular basis," added the source. Jail super Sagir Mia is now serving at a Mymensing jail. The story was originally published on Bangla Tribune
