Miscreants attacked the house of Latachapali Union Parishad (UP) Chairman Ansar Uddin Mollah in Patuakhali and broke a leg on Monday.
Mollah was beaten with an iron pipe by the attackers who had entered the Union Parishad premises in Kalapara after breaking the iron gate.
The incident took place on Monday, after which the law enforcers arrested him over an attempted murder case filed by the local Chhatra Dal unit President Russell Shikder.
Mollah is also the general secretary of the local unit of the Awami League.
After the attack, the injured UP chairman was first taken to a hospital in Kalapara. He was later transferred to Barisal Medical College Hospital for better treatment.
The eyewitness said that a group of 50 to 60 miscreants broke through the collapsable gate of the UP office and started looking for the chairman at around 5pm on Monday.
Then they again broke through the door of a room and found the chairman there. He was beaten up mercilessly.
On receiving the information, some military personnel arrived at the scene and brought the situation under control. They later handed him over to the police to take him to the hospital for treatment.
After that, the case was filed with the local police station, and he was arrested while undergoing treatment at the hospital.
Family members blamed local BNP leaders for the attack.
Meanwhile, Chhatra Dal leader Russel blamed the chairman for an attack on his life earlier.
Anwar Hossain Talukder, officer-in-charge of Mahipur Police Station, said the chairman was undergoing treatment in Barisal under police protection. He will be produced at court once he recovers.
