The flood-like situation in low-lying areas of the Brahmaputra River basin in four upazilas of Gaibandha has started improving because of the water levels of the river falling.

Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) sources said the Brahmaputra registered further fall in the 24 hours to 9am on Wednesday.

Water levels decreased by 3cm during the period and the river was flowing 147cm below the danger level at Fulchharighat point of the district.

Apart from it, water levels of other major rivers except the Teesta decreased during the period improving the flood-like situation at river basin areas of the respective river.

The Ghagot River registered a fall of 3cm during the period and was flowing 177cm below its danger mark at the new bridge road point.

The Karotoa experienced a 114cm fall and was flowing 287 cm below the danger level at the Chalk Rahima point.

Water levels of the Teesta, one of the mighty rivers in the district, rose by 32cm during the period but was flowing 5cm below the danger mark at the Kawnia point of Rangpur district.

With the fall of water levels, river erosion has intensified along the right and left banks of the district making the people living on the banks worried.

Manju Miah, chairman of Kapasia union parishad under Sundarganj upazila, said over 50 families of the union had shifted their houses to other places due to unabated river erosion in the last few days.

Not only that, arable lands owned by the people living on the riverbank had also been devoured by the river creating a food crisis for the erosion victims.

UNO Tariqul Islam said he had given instructions to all concerned to prepare a list of erosion victims to help them provide help and assistance from the administration to mitigate their sufferings.
