  • Many displaced residents are returning home from shelters
  • Human suffering persist
Update : 23 Jun 2024, 06:24 PM

The flood situation in Moulvibazar has improved significantly due to the absence of rain in Hakaluki Haor, Kowadighi, and Hail Haor, leading to receding water levels in rivers and streams.

Floodwaters have fully receded from higher areas, although low-lying areas still remain submerged.

Many displaced residents are returning home from shelters, but human suffering persists.

Water-borne diseases are affecting those trapped by the floodwaters, and some returning residents report staying awake at night due to fear of snakes.

The floods have extensively damaged the fisheries sector.

Moulvibazar District Fisheries Officer Md Shahnewaz Siraji said on Sunday afternoon that more than 718 ponds and farms over 104 hectares have been affected, resulting in the loss of 225 tons of fish worth Tk4.18 crore. Around 79 fish fries were also swept away, valued at Tk71 lakh.

According to the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) Moulvibazar, the Manu River is currently flowing below the flood line at 341cm and 117cm at two points. The water level in the Dhalai River has fully receded, while the Kushiyara River remains slightly above the danger level at 7cm. The Juri River is still flowing above the danger mark at 188cm.

Moulvibazar Deputy Commissioner Urmi Binte Salam said that both government and private relief efforts are ongoing, with 2,685 packets of dry food and 1,200 packets of cooked food distributed. Additionally, 75,000 water purification tablets have been supplied. She also said that four children and teenagers have drowned in the floodwaters so far.
