The water level of the Jamuna River has started to recede in Sariakandi Upazila of Bogra. However, river erosion has taken a severe turn in the area.
At least a 400-meter section in Icchamara village has been lost to the Jamuna River. Additionally, another 50 acres of crop fields have also been claimed by river erosion in the village. The water level in the Bangali River is also rising.
Sources at the Water Development Board reported that water levels have started to recede at the Mathurapara point of Sariakandi. The water height in the river was 15.26 meters on Saturday, which decreased to 14.97 meters on Sunday and further to 14.80 meters on Monday.
Although the water level in the Jamuna is falling, the opposite is occurring in the Bangali River. On Sunday, the water height was 13.84 meters, up from 13.63 meters the previous day.
Meanwhile, as the water starts to recede, more areas are experiencing river erosion in the upazila. Another 300 families are currently fearing the loss of their homes. The local flood control dam is also at risk.
River erosion has taken a serious turn in the Madarganj area as well. Residents of Icchara village also fear losing their homes within the next two days.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer Touhidur Rahman stated that he has already visited the affected areas and informed higher authorities of the situation.
