A farmer died after being bitten by Russell's Viper in Faridpur on Friday morning.
The deceased was identified as Hossain Bepari, 51.
Villagers killed two Russell's Vipers after spotting the snakes in Dikrirchar union on Thursday and Friday.
A former Union Parishad member Helaluddin said: “Hossain was bitten by the snake on Thursday afternoon and admitted to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical College Hospital in Faridpur. Preparations were being made to transfer him to Dhaka due to his worsening condition, but he unfortunately passed away on Friday morning.”
Meanwhile, Murad Molla, 45, spotted a Russell's Viper while working in the field on Friday morning.
He said: "I saw the snake while working in the peanut field in the morning. Then I brought a stick and killed it by hitting it three or four times. Yusuf, from the same village, had also killed another Russell's viper on Thursday.”
Faridpur Awami League Publicity Secretary Md Niaz Zaman Sajib said: “The district Awami League announced a reward on Thursday for killing the snake. The president is currently in Dhaka. If anyone contacts the general secretary regarding Russell's Viper killing, the reward will be provided."
Golam Kuddus Bhuiyan, a forest official, said: “Killing any wildlife is a punishable offence by law. Russell's Viper, which had become extinct in the country, has been sighted again since 2014. Who would be responsible if someone died from a snake bite while attempting to catch or kill Russell's Viper motivated by the reward announcement? The number of deaths due to snake bites is insignificant compared to the daily deaths from road accidents.”
