Cyclone Remal leaves over 600,000 residents in Satkhira without power

  • Power outage reported around 11pm on Sunday
  • Uprooted trees fell on transmission lines

More than 600,000 residents in Satkhira have been without power since Sunday night due to the impact of Cyclone Remal.

The power outage was caused by snapped power poles and uprooted trees falling on transmission lines around 11pm.

The power supply of West Zone Power Distribution Company remained normal till 10:30pm on Sunday in the municipal town of the district headquarters. 

The lack of electricity has also disrupted the mobile network.

Shyamnagar, Kaliganj, and Assasuni upazilas have been particularly affected.

Abdul Halim of Burigoalini area said: "My phone has only 1% charge. The phone will die soon.”

Jannatul Nayeem, another resident of the area said: "I can not communicate with anyone due to network problems and no charge on my mobile phone.:

Ziaur Rahman, general manager of Satkhira Palli Bidyut Samity, said electricity cables were snapped in many places due to the storm. 

“We have already restored power to many lines. The extent of the damage is yet to be ascertained,” he added.

Motiar Rahman, assistant engineer of Satkhira West Zone Power Distribution Company, said: "We have 56,000 customers. The power supply to the main transmission line was snapped after 11pm on Sunday as trees were uprooted and some poles collapsed due to the cyclone. We are starting work to ensure power supply immediately after the storm ends.”

He added that they have been able to ensure electricity for 40,000 customers out of 56,000. 

The severe cyclonic storm Remal over Koyra, Khulna has now moved northwards and weakened into a land deep depression over Jessore and adjoining areas. 

It is likely to move northeastwards further and weaken into a land depression by giving precipitation gradually, said a special weather bulletin by the Bangladesh Meteorological Department on Monday.

Maritime ports of Payra and Mongla have been advised to lower danger signal no 10 and hoist local cautionary signal no 3. 

Meanwhile, maritime ports of Cox's Bazar and Chittagong have been advised to lower danger signal no 9 and hoist local cautionary signal no 3. 

All fishing boats and trawlers over North Bay have been advised to remain in shelter until Tuesday morning and proceed cautiously.
