Natore’s Singra Upazila unit of the Awami League on Saturday issued a show-cause notice to Lutful Habib Rubel, a upazila parishad chairman candidate, over his alleged involvement in physically assaulting, and abducting his rival candidate, Delwar Hossain.

The accused is the Upazila Awami League joint general secretary and the brother-in-law of State Minister for ICT Zunaid Ahmed Palak. Rubel recently resigned as the Sherkole Union Parishad chairman.

The notice stipulates that Rubel must provide a written response within the next three days, explaining why no organizational measures should be taken against him. Failure to do so will result in organizational action being taken against him.

Sheikh Ohidur Rahman, the president of Singra Upazila Awami League, expressed his disappointment regarding the situation.

“If Rubel fails to provide a satisfactory response in line with the party's constitution, he will face expulsion from the party,” he said.

Additionally, State Minister Palak instructed Rubel to withdraw his candidacy in the Singra Upazila Parishad elections.

On Friday, the state minister said he would ensure appropriate action is taken against Rubel to set an example for the MP-minister's relatives.

Expressing his regret and offering an apology over the incident after visiting Delwar at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital on Friday, Palak said that no one linked to the abduction would be spared from punishment.

According to the case filed over the incident, upazila unit Swechchhasebak League General Secretary Mohan Ali and his associates forced Delwar Hossain, the victim, into a microbus while he was returning home after submitting the nomination form online on Monday.

They then tortured him and left him unconscious in front of his village house.

The seriously injured Delwar was taken to the hospital and shifted to the ICU of Rajshahi Medical College Hospital at midnight after his condition became critical.

Later, at least 10 people were identified after analyzing CCTV footage of the incident.

Among the 10 people are the manager of a business run by Rubel and his chauffeur.

Most of those identified are leaders and activists of the Juba League, Swechchhasebak League and Sramik League, according to sources.

Delwar's brother Mujibur Rahman filed the case with Natore Sadar police station against 20 to 25 unidentified men later on Monday night.

Delwar’s son Munayem Hossain filed an application with the Election Commission Secretariat on Wednesday to cancel Rubel's nomination papers, accusing him of abducting and torturing his father.

On Thursday, the commission sent a show-cause notice to the candidate  asking him to appear in person at the Agargaon election building on Monday to respond to the notice.
