Update : 14 Dec 2023, 11:43 AM

Train movement on the Dhaka-Mymensingh-Dhaka route resumed on Thursday morning after almost 26 hours of disruption following the derailment of seven coaches of the Mohanganj Express in Bankharia of Gazipur early on Wednesday.

A 20-foot stretch of railway track was cut by unidentified miscreants, which caused the derailment at around 4am.

Rail communication on the route was fully restored after 6:30am on Thursday upon completion of the repair work of the damaged railway line in the Bankharia area.

After the incident, trains toward Mymensingh were operated on an alternate route via Tongi.

Meanwhile, Bhawal Express train left Mymensingh around 6:38am, said Hanif Ali, station master of Joydebpur Railway Junction.

A man was killed as the Dhaka-bound Mohanganj Express derailed.

Gazipur Fire Service Deputy Director (DAD) Abdullah Al Arefin said miscreants uprooted the rail tracks with a cutting torch at some point in the night. As soon as the train that left Mohanganj at 11pm reached Bankharia’s Chilai Bridge in Gazipur early morning, seven coaches along with the engine collapsed on the low ground next to the railway track.

The fire service recovered a 12-kg gas cylinder from the forest beside the railway tracks.
