At least 23 people were injured in a clash that broke out between members of the police, the ruling Awami League and the opposition BNP in Narayanganj on Tuesday.
The incident took place on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway at around 8:30am.
Later, additional police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control by firing teargas shells and rubber bullets.
Police have detained three protesters in connection with the incident.
Three police officers sustained injuries, including stab wounds during the clash, and the rest of the injured are members of the Awami League and BNP.
The names of the injured could not be known yet.
According to police and locals, BNP leaders and activists blocked the highway and took out a rally in Panchrukhi area around 8:30am.
At that time, local Awami League leaders and activists took out a procession to protest against BNP's program.
When the police tried to control the situation, BNP leaders and activists threw bricks at the police, triggering a clash between the three groups.
The protesters have vandalized two buses, including a BRTC bus.
Local BNP leader Nazrul Islam Azad said: "Many of our leaders and activists were injured in the attack by the police and Awami League. The police fired indiscriminately at our peaceful protest. Still, we will continue the blockade by staying on the streets for 72 hours.”
Narayanganj District Additional Superintendent of Police (Administration and Finance) Amir Khasru said three people have been detained so far. Action will be taken against them after verification.
