  • 94mm rainfall recorded in 24 hours
  • Fire service issues warning

Update : 04 Aug 2023, 10:35 PM

The Rangamati district administration has been urging residents living in the hills to move to safer places due to the fear of landslides after incessant rains.

The local Fire Service and Civil Defence authorities have announced the warning through loudspeakers since Friday.

Meanwhile, a building was observed collapsing in the Rupnagar area of the city in the morning.

However, no district administration officials were seen present in the area.

According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, Rangamati recorded 94mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours.

Dolear Hossain, a Rupnagar area resident, said: "This morning, trees collapsed onto my sister's house. I have been cleaning the soil since early morning. Every year, during the rainy season, such incidents occur. However, there's nowhere else to go. So, the working people continue to live here despite the risks."

Khadija Begum, another resident of Rupnagar, said: "The rainfall has not been too heavy yet. If it becomes heavy, I will consider seeking shelter. However, going to a shelter is not easy.”

Warehouse Inspector of Rangamati Fire Service and Civil Defence Billal Hossain said: "Moderate to light rainfall has occurred in the past two days. Following the district administration's guidance, we are raising awareness about safe shelters, especially in Rupnagar and Shimultoli areas.”
