President, prime minister mourn casualties in Jhalakathi launch fire

At least 40 people died as fire rips through vessel mid-river

President Md Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina have expressed profound shock and sorrow at the loss of lives and injuries to passengers after a launch caught fire mid-rover in the southern district of Jhalakathi.

In a condolence message, President Hamid prayed for eternal peace of the departed souls and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family members, reports BSS.

He also prayed for early recovery of the injured people.

In a separate message of condolence, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina prayed for eternal peace of the departed souls of the deceased and early recovery of those injured in the launch fire.

She conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family members.

At least 40 people were reported dead so far after a midnight fire swept through the launch “MV Obhijan 10” on the Sugandha river.

The death toll is likely to rise as more passengers have been injured after the Barguna-bound launch caught fire. At least 72 passengers injured in the incident were taken to hospital.
