Cox's Bazar hotels fined Tk25,000 for overcharging

Update : 18 Dec 2021, 10:40 PM

A mobile court of the Cox's Bazar District Administration has imposed fines totaling Tk25,000 on two hotels for charging extra fares from tourists.

They carried out separate raids at Hotel Sea Pearl, fined Tk5,000, and Hotel Opela, fined Tk20,000, on Friday afternoon.

Executive Magistrate (Tourism cell) Md Syed Murad Islam said a group of miscreants was collecting extra money by taking advantage of an increase in tourist arrivals in Cox’s Bazar for the Victory Day holidays.

“As a result, hotels and restaurants in the Cox's Bazar hotel-motel zone were raided on Friday to prevent any harassment of tourists. Two tourists were refunded from Hotel Sea Pearl,” said Murad.

He also urged tourists to inform the information and complaint centre of the district administration if they had any complaints.

Since the three-day Victory Day holiday began on Thursday, several tourists have complained of having to pay double fares at hotels and restaurants.

Police and the district administration said legal action will be taken if the allegations are proven.
