A Supreme Court lawyer has served a legal notice seeking the division of the Dhaka District and Sessions Judge’s Court and Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court into two separate judicial zones—Dhaka North and Dhaka South.
The notice was sent to the law minister, the secretary of the Law and Justice Division, and the registrar general of the Supreme Court.
Supreme Court lawyer Salahuddin Regan served the notice on Thursday, seeking necessary administrative, legal and judicial measures to implement the proposed restructuring.
The notice called for establishing or reorganising the Dhaka North District and Sessions Judge’s Court and Dhaka North Metropolitan Sessions Court, as well as the Dhaka South District and Sessions Judge’s Court and Dhaka South Metropolitan Sessions Court.
It said Dhaka’s large population, extensive geographical area and growing caseload of civil, criminal, family, special and metropolitan criminal cases have made it necessary to reorganise the existing judicial structure.
The current system is under considerable pressure from the large number of cases, litigants, lawyers, witnesses, accused and other stakeholders, the notice said, adding that this has hampered court access, case management and the speedy disposal of cases.
The notice asked the authorities to take the necessary steps within 30 days and inform the lawyer in writing.
It warned that a writ petition would be filed with the High Court if no appropriate action is taken within the stipulated period.
