Update : 13 Sep 2026, 06:55 PM

A Dhaka court on Sunday deferred until October 25 the hearing on framing charges in the murder and robbery case over the killing of Maulana Nurul Islam Faruki 12 years ago.

The case was scheduled for a hearing on charge framing before Dhaka Ninth Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Mahmudul Islam. However, lawyer Md Zayedur Rahman, representing accused Engineer alias Riaz alias Ripon, sought time, saying the accused could not appear in court because his mobile phone was switched off.

The court granted the time petition and fixed October 25 for the next hearing, said bench assistant Abul Kashem.

Abdullah Al Tasnim Nahid and Abu Raihan Mahmud Abdul Hadi appeared in court on Sunday. Hadisur Rahman Sagar was produced before the court from jail.

Advocate K M Shariful Islam, representing Sagar, filed a bail petition. The court also fixed Oct 25 for a hearing on the application.

Meanwhile, 2 accused, Mahmud Ibn Bashar and Rafiqul Islam Fardin, remain absconding, and arrest warrants have been issued against them. Mahmud Ibn Bashar is also on bail.

On August 27, 2014, unidentified assailants hacked and slit the throat of Maulana Nurul Islam Faruki at his residence in East Rajabazar. His son, Faisal Faruki, filed a case over the incident.

On November 5, 2024, Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Additional Special Police Superintendent K M Abul Kashem, the investigating officer, submitted a charge sheet against 6 people, 10 years after the incident. Although the case was filed over the murder, the CID investigation also found allegations of robbery against the accused.

According to the case details, the incident took place at around 9pm on August 27, 2014, at Faruki’s residence in East Rajabazar. Police recovered his body later that night.

According to the First Information Report (FIR), at around 7pm on the day of the incident, several people rang the doorbell of Nurul Islam Faruki’s residence. After the door was opened, 2 men entered and sat with Nurul Islam in the drawing room.

Shortly afterward, another 6–7 people entered the residence. As there was not enough space to sit, Maruf Hossain, a maternal cousin of Faisal Faruki, went inside to bring chairs.

When he returned, he saw the accused holding a pistol and a machete to Nurul Islam’s head. They then tied up everyone at the residence and killed Nurul Islam Faruki.

The assailants took cash, mobile phones, gold jewelry and a camera from the residence.
