One killed in street vendors’ clash in Narayanganj

One person has died after two groups of street vendors clashed in Narayanganj city on Thursday.

The deceased has been identified as 18-year-old Zubayer Hossain, a street vendor in the area, confirmed Narayanganj district Additional Superintendent of Police Nazmul Hassan. 

According to locals and police, there had been rising conflicts between two groups of street vendors in front of the St Paul’s Church on the Bangabandhu Road.

On Thursday, two vendors, Shwapan and Saiful, got into an argument regarding setting up shop.

At one point, the argument escalated to a scuffle when other vendors intervened to move them away. Soon after, outsiders joined in and a clash ensued when unidentified men stabbed Zubayer and fled the scene.

The victim was brought to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where duty doctors declared him dead.

Additional SP Nazmul said that they have collected evidence from the scene and efforts were underway to arrest the perpetrators.. 

On January 16, 2018, nearly 50 people including, Mayor Selina Hayat Ivy, were injured in a clash between street vendors. 

According to the Narayanganj City Corporation, even though vendors have been given shops in a hawker’s market, they sell it off and insist on setting up their businesses on the roadside.
