Local leaders of the Awami League on Saturday vowed to work together for the win of ruling party nominated mayoral candidate Abul Khair Abdullah (Khokon Serniabat) in the upcoming Barisal City Corporation (BCC) polls.
In the special meeting, the central leaders of the party called for minimizing differences among leaders and work for Khokon.
When Khokon Serniabat arrived at the venue, his elder brother, also the president of Barisal District AL, Abul Hasanat Abdullah, welcomed Khokon with a warm embrace.
During his speech at the meeting held on the Gourandi municipality ground, the AL mayoral candidate said: “We should forget our differences and build a new Barisal with joint efforts."
He said: “BCC election is important because its' impact will fall on all the surrounding districts. We want everyone's cooperation to this end.”
Presidium Member Jahangir Kabir Nanak at the meeting said that party chief Sheikh Hasina has done unprecedented development in the communication sector of the country. As part of her efforts the government has built Padma bridge which has facilitated quick communication to and from Barisal.
“Every district under the Barisal division is now at the doorstep of development and for the continuation of this development everyone should work together to vote for Khokon Serniabat,” he added.
Dhaka TribuneAnother Presidium Member Abdur Rahman said that the course of the direction of the polls caption will change from now on as the two brothers have hugged each other in front of everyone.
Joint General Secretary of AL Bahauddin Naseem at the meeting said that the traitors among AL leaders will be punished and beaten with shoes.
He said: "I have learned from Gazipur and we will not compromise with dishonest people."
Abul Hasanat Abdullah said: “We all have to go from house to house to secure a win for boat.”
He appealed to the residents of Barisal city to vote for his younger brother Khokon Serniabat.
Earlier, Khokon Serniabat did not attend the first extended meeting of the party ahead of the BCC polls held on May 26. The disunity among the leaders of the AL became visible following his absence from the meeting.
President of Barisal District AL, Abul Hasanat Abdullah, is also the father of incumbent city mayor Serniabat Sadiq Abdullah.
The other mayoral candidates in the polls are Jatiya Party's Iqbal Hossain Taposh (plough), Islami Andolan Bangladesh's Mufti Syed Mohammad Faizul Karim (hand fan), Zaker Party's Mizanur Rahman Bachchu (rose flower), independent candidate Kamrul Ahsan (clock), Asaduzzaman (elephant) and Ali Hossain (deer).
A total of 2,76,298 people will cast their votes in 894 rooms of 126 polling stations in Barishal City Corporation election on June 12.
