Massive fire tears through Cox’s Bazar Rohingya camp

The incident occurred at the Balukhali refugee camp no 11 on Sunday afternoon

A massive fire broke out at a Rohingya camp in Cox's Bazar's Ukhiya upazila again. 

The incident occurred at the Balukhali refugee camp no 11 at 2:40pm, Ukhiya fire service and civil denfece In-Charge Emdadul Haq said.

Nine units of fire service and local people managed to bring the blaze under control after two hours, he said.

Dil Mohammad, a resident of Balukhali Rohingya camp, said: "Suddenly there was a huge fire in the camp. The wind is spreading the fire quickly. We are trying to put out the fire after evacuating the residents of the camp."

The fire spread to the No. 10, 11, and 12 refugee camps. However, the cause of the fire could not be known immediately.

So far, at least 2,000 shacks have been gutted in the fire.

Cox's Bazar Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner (RRRC) Mohammed Mizanur Rahman said: "The fire started from a house in camp no 11. As soon as the fire broke out, two units of Ukhiya Fire Service followed by two more teams from the district headquarters rushed to douse the fire."

No casualty was reported till now.

Armed Police Battalion (APBn) Captain Amir Zafar, in charge of camp security, said: "After receiving the information about the fire in the camp, our people reached the spot and started working to douse the fire. Besides, the fire service arrived to control the fire. The intensity of the fire is very high. Nothing can be said beyond this at this moment."
