Syeda Rizwana Hasan, chief executive officer of Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (BELA), and her team were attacked and harassed while vising a site in the Lake City residential area of Chittagong.
The incident took place on Thursday afternoon near the Shupari Bagar area of the port city.
The attack was allegedly carried out by Chittagong City Corporation Ward 9 Councillor Jahurul Alam Jashim.
Syeda Rizwana Hasan filed a written complaint at Akbar Shah police station over the incident.
Aliur Rahman, an environment journalist said that Jahurul Alam Jashim has built establishments by razing hills in the Shupari Bagan area.
“Our team, along with a team of BELA went to visit the spot after receiving complaints about the matter. During the visit, Councilor Jasim's men, armed with knives and other sharp weapons, forcefully took our vehicle to an office at the Lake City residential area,” he added.
“When informed, the police came and recovered our car. The councilor's people threw bricks at our car,” he further said.
In this regard, Akbar Shah police station Inspector (Investigation) Saker Ahmed said that they have received a written complaint and the matter will be investigated soon.
In the written complaint Syeda Rizwana Hasan has named several individuals who carried out the attack on her team.
They are -- Md Hridoy, Abu Noman, Saifuddin Bhuiyan, Anis Chowdhury Rajon and others.
She mentioned that the men continuously asked them why they were visiting the site before attacking them.
