Awami League leaders and activists of Chapainawabganj are displeased with the resignation of two BNP lawmakers from Parliament, claiming that the opposition party wants to hinder the country's progress.
Former MP Ziaur Rahman, president of Chapainawabganj district unit Awami League, said that the BNP had staged the resignation drama as it failed to garner public support through its movement.
“But the people are firm on supporting Sheikh Hasina's leadership. No evil force can suppress the Awami League,” he told Dhaka Tribune.
District unit General Secretary and former MP Abdul Odud said that the BNP was trying to impede the country's development, being envious of the endless efforts made by the prime minister.
Abdus Salam, a valiant Freedom Fighter of the district, said that the BNP MPs had failed to conduct any development activities in their constituencies. “Now they are again trying to create an unstable situation in the country,” he claimed.
On December 10, the BNP MPs declared that they would resign from Parliament, and the following day, they submitted their resignation letters to Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury. Six of the applications were accepted. The Election Commission is set to declare schedules for by-polls in the constituencies.
Chapainawabganj district unit BNP Convenor Golam Zakaria said that party leaders and activists at all levels of the district were united.
Former lawmaker Syeda Asifa Ashrafi Papia said that the seat of Chapainawabganj was known as the stronghold of the BNP's ally Jamaat-e-Islami.
“I organized the BNP here by gathering the people, due to which the people of the Sadar area repeatedly voted and elected the BNP,” Papia said.
BNP leader Aminul Islam, who resigned as the MP from Chapainawabganj-2 constituency, said that he had resigned to support the ongoing democratic movement of the BNP. “In the last four years, various development works have been done in the area at a massive rate,” he claimed.
The resignation letter of Chapainawabganj-3 MP Harunur Rashid, who is abroad, was not accepted. He will submit his resignation letter in person upon his return home from Australia.
