Police recovered the body of a private tutor from a student’s house in Chapainawabganj municipality on Tuesday, a day after she went missing.

The deceased was identified as Maryam Begum, 55, wife of Mosaddek Hossain of Ujjwalpara in the municipality. She earned a living by providing private tuition at different homes.

According to police, Maryam went to the house of Md Rubel and Sumi Khatun in Namoshankarbati Chowkapara on Monday morning to tutor their two children but did not return home afterward.

After failing to locate her, one of her children filed a general diary (GD) with Sadar Model Police Station that night.

Chapainawabganj Superintendent of Police Gautam Kumar Biswas said police recovered Maryam’s body, wrapped in a sack, from the couple’s house on Tuesday morning after receiving a call through the national emergency service 999.

“Injury marks were found on her head and lips, and her earrings had been torn off,” the SP said.

Police detained Rubel and Sumi Khatun for questioning after Rubel himself informed emergency services about the body, he added.

Based on initial interrogation, investigators suspect the murder was committed for Maryam’s gold earrings.

Police later recovered the torn earrings from a local goldsmith after learning that Sumi had allegedly sold them on Monday. The goldsmith was also detained for questioning.

Maruf Hossain Boni, son of the deceased, said he went to Rubel’s house on Monday night searching for his mother, but the couple claimed she had already left after completing the tuition session.

SP Gautam Kumar Biswas said legal proceedings were underway in connection with the murder.

“The house owner Rubel, his wife Sumi, and goldsmith Deepak have been taken into custody for questioning. More details will be disclosed after further investigation,” he said.
