Experts at a discussion have stressed that balanced and soil test–based fertilization is a key approach to addressing the ongoing fertilizer crisis while ensuring long-term soil health. They said that proper fertilizer management can increase crop yields by at least 20%, a result consistently observed in field trials conducted across the country in recent years.
The remarks were made at an awareness campaign and motivational meeting on soil health protection and balanced fertilizer use, organized by the Soil Resource Development Institute (SRDI) at its Chapainawabganj Regional Office on Friday.
Speaking as chief guest, SRDI Director General Dr Samia Sultana said the agriculture sector has made significant progress, with about 70% of Bangladesh’s population still dependent on farming. She also highlighted challenges such as the ongoing fuel crisis and heavy government spending on fertilizer subsidies, which reached Tk 27,000 crore in the last fiscal year.
She emphasized the importance of maintaining soil organic matter, proper pH levels, and the use of dolomitic lime. Dr Sultana noted that reduced use of organic matter, green manure, and biofertilizers is contributing to declining soil fertility. She called balanced fertilization based on soil testing essential for sustainable production and urged strict implementation of agricultural guidelines.
SRDI officials and about 25 farmers attended the program.
