3 dead as launch hits bridge in Shariatpur

Two other passengers were injured

At least three people were killed, and two others injured after a Dhaka launch hit a bridge in Shariatpur’s Gosairhat upazila.

The incident took place at around 4am on Sunday on Jayanti River, reports Bangla Tribune. 

The deceased have been identified as Tanjil, Sagar Ali, and Shakil Ahmed. 

Confirming the matter Gosairhat police station OC Aslam Sikder said that a launch named “Swarnadwip Plus” left for Damudya from Sadarghat at 10:30pm on Saturday. 

When the launch entered Jayanti River, the water tank on the third floor of the launch collided with the bridge in at Saikka in Shariatpur’s Gosairhat upazila, the OC added.

“The water tank fell on the sleeping passengers, leaving three dead on the spot, and two more injured,” he added. 

Gosairhat Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Kafi Bin Kabir said: “Rescue operations were started after receiving the news. The bodies were taken to a local health complex.”

He mentioned that one of the injured was sent to Dhaka for better treatment.
