Panchagarh boat capsize: Probe report submission deadline extended for 3 days

Rescue drive is underway for the fourth consecutive days

Update : 28 Sep 2022, 04:47 PM

The deadline for probe report submission over the Panchagarh boat capsize has been extended for three more days.

Additional District Magistrate Dipangkar Roy, also chief of the probe committee, confirmed the matter on Wednesday noon.

So far, 68 bodies were recovered till Tuesday in connection with Sunday’s boat capsize in the Karatoa River in Boda upazila of Panchagarh.

No more bodies were recovered till the filing of the report.

However, a rescue drive is underway for the fourth consecutive day.

The probe work has been hampered as the committee members were busy in rescue work, monitoring, ensuring proper treatment for injured people and providing support to the families of the deceased, said the committee chief.

“That’s why, we submitted an application to the district administration for extending three more days,” he said.

The administration granted the application, said the committee chief.

A five-member committee was formed on September 25 immediately after the boat capsize incident.

The trawler, carrying 70-80 passengers including women and children, capsized in the middle of the river while heading towards Badheshwar Temple on the occasion of Mayalaya at around 2:30pm on Sunday.

Some of the passengers managed to swim to safety.

The trawler was carrying double the number of passengers than it had the capacity to, according to the district administration.
