Chittagong University unit Bangladesh Chhatra League has allegedly assaulted a journalist after he refused to attend a birthday party of one of the organization's members.
The incident took place in room no 212 of AF Rahman Hall of the university at around 11:30pm on Monday, reports Bangla Tribune.
The victim, Redwan Ahmad, is a student in the Department Of Arabic of the university. He is also working as a university representative of Dhaka Mail and Naya Shatabdi.
Ahmed told Bangla Tribune that the Chhatra League men also threatened to kick him out of the hall if he does not join the student wing.
He said: “That night some Chhatra League members including Niloy and Atik came to my room, and asked me to attend a birthday party. When I refused and said I am a journalist, Niloy directed Atik to beat me.”
Ahmed said he later informed Bijoy Group President Amin, and they asked Chhatra League to stop hitting him.
“But they (Chhatra League) did not listen, and continued to assault me,” he added.
Accused Atik and Arshil Azim, and Niloy were called several times in this regard, but they did not respond.
Al Amin, the leader of Bijoy Group, said: "Even after I asked them to stop, they assaulted Redwan. We are taking the matter seriously. We never support raising hands on journalists.”
Acting proctor Shahidul Islam told Bangla Tribune: "We went to the spot after being informed of the matter. We have also spoken to the victim. A written complaint has been filed in this regard.”
