Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested fugitive Tuhin Reza, who was sentenced to life in the 2005 serial bombings case.
He was arrested from Tejgaon Railgate area in the capital on Thursday. Commander of RAB-3 Lt Col Arif Mohiuddin Ahmed gave the information in a press conference organized at RAB's media centre in Kawran Bazar, Dhaka on Friday.
Tuhin was on the run for 18 years. RAB claimed that he was a member of the banned militant outfit Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB). He was working undercover at a television channel.
The RAB commander said, on August 17, 2005, JMB carried out bomb attacks in 63 districts of the country. Among these, JMB carried out simultaneous bomb attacks and distribution of prohibited leaflets at several places including DC office, district judge court premises, bus terminal and college junction in Jhenaidah city. Their main aim was to announce their collective presence in Bangladesh through simultaneous attacks.
After the bomb attack, Tuhin took shelter at a camp of JMB.
He later came to Dhaka and started living in different areas.
In 2021, he rented a house in Tejgaon and started working as a video editor at a private organization, the RAB official said.
On February 27 in 2006, a Jhenidah court awarded capital punishment to Tuhin and 20 others for carrying out the bomb attacks.
Following an appeal, the High Court later commuted the sentence of 14, including Tuhin, to life in prison and acquitted seven others.
