Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said that all necessary documents, including the cases filed against former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed, have already been sent to the Dubai authorities, and expressed hope that Benazir will be brought back to Bangladesh soon
The former IGP was arrested in Dubai through Interpol.
The home minister made these remarks to journalists after a ceremony at the Secretariat on Saturday, where police personnel were awarded for their contributions to maintaining law and order.
Salahuddin Ahmed said: “The cases filed against him, along with all necessary documents, have been sent to that country. We hope the government there will complete all procedures quickly and send him back to Bangladesh.”
At the same time, he reiterated the government's firm stance on controlling the overall law-and-order situation in the country, including eliminating criminal activities in the Mohammadpur area of the capital.
The minister said: “Mohammadpur has long been a safe haven for criminals. This area will also be brought under control, and the criminals operating there will be eliminated.”
He added that the current government is working at a much faster pace than any previous administration, which, he said, has already become evident to the public.
The home minister also stated that since the elected government assumed office, police personnel have been carrying out extensive responsibilities, and they are being rewarded for their commendable work.
Speaking about the Awami League, he said: “We do not consider the Awami League a political party; rather, it is a mafia organization. Its activities remain banned. However, with its founding anniversary approaching on June 23, instructions have been issued to remain vigilant regarding any activities related to the occasion.”
