At least five people were killed and over 30 injured in a massive fire broke out at an oxygen plant following an explosion in Kadam Rasul (Keshabpur) area of Chittagong's Sitakunda upazila on Saturday afternoon.
The fire started at Seema Oxygen Plant around 4:30pm after a big bang, said Sultan Mahmud, senior officer of Kumira Fire Service Station.
CollectedOn information, nine units of Sitakunda and Kumira Fire Service rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control around 5.40pm, he added.
However, the reason behind the blast and fire could not be known immediately, said the fire official.
Meanwhile, Nurul Alam Ashek, in-charge of the hospital police outpost said, around 20 individuals have been hospitalized at the Chittagong Medical College Hospital with injuries sustained in the Sitakunda explosion.
The injured are Md Forkan, 33, Md Nur Hossain, 30, Md Motaleb, 52, Md Arafat, 22, Maksudul Alam, 60, Md Osman, 45, Md Solaiman, 40, Md Ripon, 40, Md Azad, 22, Ripon Marak, 60, Probesh, 40, Narayan Dhar, 64, Md Jasim, 50, Fency, 26, Md Zahed, 30, Mujibul Haque, 45, Rozy Begum, 20, and Nasim Shahriar, 26.
Police have so far identified three out of five of the deceased. They are Shamshul Alam, 65, Md Farid, 36, and Roton Lakhret, 45.
