3 including child injured in Shariatpur post-polls clash

The injured were sent to Dhaka Medical College

At least three people were injured including a child during a clash that broke out following the announcement of the result of Bilashpur Union Parishad (UP) polls in Shariatpur’s Zajira upazila.

The incident took place at around 6pm on Wednesday at Rahim Uddin Malai Mridha Kandi Ekota Juba Sangha centre in Ward 8 of the union.

According to locals, supporters of the defeated Matiur Rahman Sikder attacked the supporters of the winning candidate Jahangir Alam after the announcement the result was announced.

The victims were identified as Imran Hossain, Rubina Akhter, and her three-year-old daughter Lamisa.

The locals rescued them and took them to Zajira Upazila Health Complex. When the condition deteriorated, they were sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

According to police and local sources, elections were held in six unions of Jazira on Wednesday.

Following the announcement of the result at 5:30pm, supporters of Jahangir Alam took out a victory procession. 

At that time, the supporters of the defeated candidate launched an attack, triggering a clash between two sets of supporters.

The attackers started vandalizing the centre at that time.

Police had to fire 12 rounds of blank shots to bring the situation under control, Zajira police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mostafizur Rahman said.

Presiding Officer Sheikh Delwar Hossain said supporters of Matiur Rahman attacked when he was announcing the results of the polls.
