A Sylhet court has sent five volunteers of the upazila administration to jail for an unwarranted assault on tourists in Sylhet’s Jaflong.
The accused are Nazim Uddin, 23, Sohel Rana, 21, Joynal Abedin alias Joynal, 40, Laxman Chandra Das, 21, and Md Selim Ahmed, 21.
Police produced the accused before the court on Friday midday, Gowainghat Police OC KM Nazrul Islam confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune.
They were arrested over a surprise assault where six tourists were injured.
On Thursday, a group of tourists were visiting the Jaflong tourist centre.
Locals said the staff at ticket counter of the Jaflong tourist centre started arguing with the tourists about buying tickets to visit Jaflong area. At one point, some volunteers attacked the tourists with sticks and clubs.
The video of the incident has gone viral on social media.
According to OC Nazmul, security has been beefed up at the tourist spot after the incident.
Following the incident, Sylhet Deputy Commissioner Mozibor Rahman said tourists will not have to pay any fee for the next seven days to visit Jaflong.
"This incident will hurt our tourism and as the assaulters were employed by us, I take responsibility for this. Three of them have already been sacked and I asked the police to take legal action against them," he said.
