A third grader was tied with a tree by a rope and tortured for allegedly stealing Tk200 from a farm in Joypurhat.
The incident took place in Dhantala Bazar area of Khetlal Upazila of the district on Saturday afternoon. The video of the torture captured by onlookers was spread on social media.
The police then arrested one of the accused, Beli Begum, on the night of the incident after a case was filed.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Khetlal police station Nirendranath Mandal confirmed the matter.
The arrested, Beli Begum, is the wife of Abu Bakkar Siddique of Dhantala Bazar area.
The victim, Anika Akhter, 9, is the daughter of Anisur Rahman of Dhantala Bazar area. She is a third grader of the local Samantahar Government Primary School.
Citing locals, OC Nirendranath Mandal said Beli Begum, a tea vendor in Dhantala Bazar, was selling tea. At that time, alleging that Tk200 was missing from her cash box, she accused Anika of stealing it, tied her to a tree and tortured her.
OC Nirendranath Mandal further said that the child tied, with the tree, denied the accusation and started crying.
Later on, Sunday morning, the victim's grandfather Alam Hossain filed a case against two women named Beli Ara and Rahima Begum.
