Update : 10 Mar 2022, 07:08 PM

A student of Rajshahi University was critically injured after being stabbed by unidentified people early on Thursday following an altercation over offering prayers at a private dorm.

Saffat Nayem Nafi, a second-year student of the physics department, was rushed to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital and arrangements were being made to take him to Dhaka for better treatment, said RU Pro-VC Sultan-Ul-Islam.

Police are yet to identify the miscreants.

Motihar police station Officer-in-Charge Anwar Ali Tuhin said they were yet to receive a written complaint in this connection.

Proctor Prof M Ashabul Hoque said that he came to know about an altercation among one of Nafi’s friends and some juniors at the mess over not offering prayers. Nafi along with some others then went to solve the issue among the two groups.

The proctor said that the owner of the house also attended the arbitration.

The proctor said: “Prayer is mandatory for those residing at the dorm. The problem arose when one of Nafi’s friends did not go to the mosque to offer prayers. Later, after the meeting, some outsiders attacked Nafi at the mess. Nafi’s statement could not be taken as he is unable to talk.”

Nafi’s classmate Ibrahim, who was present at the scene, said some men launched the attack with knives, leaving Nafi seriously injured.

Hearing about the incident, students of the Department of Physics staged a sit-in program in front of the VC’s residence around 10am, reports UNB. They demanded quick arrest of the culprits.

They suspended their program around 11:15am upon the assurance of the VC.

However, the students said that they would resume protests if the attackers were not arrested by next Sunday.
