Authorities at the Kashimpur Central Jail-2 have seized a mobile phone from the possession of Nur Hossain, who is currently awaiting execution in a condemned cell for the Narayanganj seven-murder.
The cell phone was confiscated on January 5, Jail Superintendent Abdul Jalil told Dhaka Tribune on Saturday.
“We received a tip-off that Nur had been using a phone from his condemned cell. Then we conducted a raid and found a feature phone there,” he said.
Hossain will face legal action for using a phone while in jail, said the prison official.
A probe body headed by the prison’s deputy superintendent has been formed to figure out how the device was smuggled into the prison.
The death row inmate had reportedly been using the phone to keep in contact with influential people to ensure that his younger brother Nur Uddin and nephew Shah Jalal Badal would win in the upcoming election to Narayanganj City Corporation.
Seven murders in Narayanganj
Seven people, including Narayanganj City Corporation panel mayor Nazrul Islam and senior lawyer Chandan Sarker, were abducted from the Dhaka-Narayanganj link road on April 27, 2014.
Later, their bodies were found floating in the Shitalakkhya river.
Following the incident, Selina Islam Beauty, the widow of Nazrul, filed a case against six people while Chandan’s son-in-law filed another case.
On January 16, 2017 Narayanganj District and Sessions Judge Court found 35 people, including Nur and 25 ex-RAB officials, guilty of abduction and murder of the seven people and also destroying evidence.
On August 22 of the same year, the High Court upheld the death sentence of 15 convicts, including Nur and three Rapid Action Battalion officials, and commuted the penalty of 11 others to life in jail in the two cases filed over the murders.
