Sheikh Aslam, also known as Sweden Aslam, a notorious criminal, has been released on bail from the Gazipur Kashimpur High-Security Central Jail.

Aslam, 62, the son of the late Sheikh Jinnat Ali from Nawabganj upazila, Dhaka, walked out of the prison on Tuesday night, Lutfor Rahman, the jail superintendent, confirmed on Wednesday.

Lutfor said that when the bail documents arrived at the prison, the authorities verified the documents and released him at 9pm.

Sheikh Aslam had been in the Kashimpur jail since 2014. His relatives waited at the prison gate, and once he was released, he went away with them.

It has been reported that Sheikh Aslam was involved in the murder of Jubo League leader Galib in Tejgaon.

Galib was murdered on March 23, 1997, and a case was filed against Sheikh Aslam and 20 others.

Although the police submitted a charge sheet on April 8, 1998, the case is still pending trial. Out of 24 witnesses in the case, the police have managed to present 14 in court.

Aslam was granted bail in this case and thus released from prison.

Aslam was one of the 23 top criminals declared during the tenure of the BNP-led four-party coalition government.

He was also accused of shooting a young boy named Shakil, who was holding his mother's hand, in front of a school in the Farmgate area in 1986.

Following this, he was accused in several other murder cases. He briefly stayed in Sweden during that time, and upon returning, he adopted the name "Sweden" as part of his alias.
