4 die after drinking spurious liquor in Sirajganj

Police arrest one over the incident

Four people died and two others fell critically ill after consuming spurious liquor in Shialkol union of Sirajganj district on Monday.

The deceased were identified as Abdul Wahab, 32, Md Abdul, 45, Taher Sheikh, 48, and Pintu Sheikh, 40.

The victims died in different government and private hospitals.

Two others, who fell seriously ill after taking the spurious liquor, including a former UP member, are undergoing treatment at a local hospital, reports Bangla Tribune.

Police have detained Sanjid Kumar Bhoumik, owner of a homeopathic medicine shop, from the adjacent Kamarkhanda upazila on the charge of supplying the spurious liquor to the victims.

A large quantity of rectified spirit was seized from Sanjid’s shop.

Confirming the matter, Sirajganj Sadar Circle Additional Superintendent of Police Jasim Uddin Chowdhury said that the victims took the liquor together in Shialkol union’s Shyampur area on Saturday night and fell very sick the next day.

Later, they were rushed to different local hospitals. Two died while undergoing treatment and two died on their way to the hospitals, said the senior police official.

“A case has been filed under the Narcotics Control Act over the incident. An investigation is underway in this regard,” he added.

Contacted, Shialkol union parishad (UP) Chairman Abdul Mannan Sheikh said: “I have heard that four people have died after drinking spurious liquor.

“Two others, who fell very sick, are currently undergoing treatment,” he said.
