Heavy rains aggravate Bandarban flood situation

Looming landslides have put 20,000 people in harm’s way

Update : 28 Jul 2021, 06:45 PM

The rise in water levels of Sangu and Matamuhuri rivers caused by continuous heavy rains have worsened the flood situation in Bandarban’s Lama and Alikadam upazilas.

Road communication between the two upazilas and the rest of the district remained suspended till Wednesday due to the flood.

On the other hand, flood waters have receded from Naikhongchhari upazila in the past 24 hours.

As heavy rains continued in Bandarban on Wednesday, locals are now in constant fear of landslides in the hill district, where landslides triggered by downpours are often fatal.

Loudspeaker announcements are being made in the disaster-prone areas to help evacuate people from the risky hilly areas to shelters.

Some 20,000 people of 4,500 families in Lama Sadar, Ghazalia, Rupsipara, Sorai, Aziznagar, Fansiakhali and Faitang unions are at risk.

According to locals, heavy rains since Monday night have submerged various parts of the road connecting Lama and Alikadam.

Residents of the district complained that incessant rainfall coupled with the ongoing pandemic-induced strict lockdown had made their lives miserable.

Flooding of farmlands has severely damaged crops as well.

Crops worth Tk1 crore have been destroyed in Chokhyong union alone, dealing a huge blow to the farmers and their families, according to UP Chairman Ferdous Rahman.

Lama Municipality Mayor Md Zahirul Islam said that they had formed a committee to monitor the flood situation round the clock and arranged boats to carry the flood-affected people to safety.

“Relief materials have been distributed among the flood-hit families in the low-lying areas,” Alikadam UNO Md Syed Ikbal said, adding that the farmers facing losses would be given aid.

Landslides have occurred in various areas of the district but no fatalities have been reported yet.
