Heavy rains trigger fear of landslides in Bandarban

Local administration asks people to leave the risky hilly areas

Heavy rainfall from Monday night that inundated parts of Lama, Alikadam and Naikhongchhari upazilas in Bandarban have triggered fear of landslides among the locals.

The road communication between Bandarban Sadar and Lama, Alikadam upazilas has already been snapped while roads to Naikhongchhari could collapse any time as well.

Heavy downpour usually triggers landslides that often claim lives in the Bandarban hill district.

Loudspeaker announcements are also being made in the disaster-prone areas to help evacuate people from the risky hilly areas to the safer shelters.

According to locals, heavy rains from Monday night that continued till Tuesday morning have submerged many areas in Bandarban.

The water level of the Matamuhuri River and other water bodies increased due to the heavy rain.

Lama upazila administration has already taken precautionary measures to prevent fatalities from landslides.

According to locals, about 20,000 people from 4,500 families in Lama Sadar, Ghazalia, Rupsipara, Sorai, Aziznagar, Fansiakhali and Faitang unions are at risk of landslides.

Lama resident Md Shahjahan said the low-lying areas have been flooded due to heavy rains. People are using boats as a mode of communication.

According to the locals, a landslide in Bagarjhiri hill has already destroyed a house and Ruposhipara road, causing disruption to road communication.

Lama Upazila Parishad Chairman Mostafa Jamal said there was a risk of more damage if the heavy rains continued.

Baishari Upazila Parishad Chairman Md Alam Company said more heavy rain might cause serious damage in the area.

Heavy shower have inundated Naikhongchhari Sadar, Baishari and Ghumdhum areas causing extensive damage to croplands. However, no casualties were reported from the flood.
