Khulna division has again recorded the highest Covid-19 deaths in a day -- 32-- since the pandemic started in the country last year.
In the 24 hours between 8am Tuesday and 8am Wednesday, the division also recorded 903 new Covid-19 cases across the 10 districts under it.
On Sunday, the division had recorded 28 deaths and 763 infections in a single day.
Dr Rasheda Sultana, the divisional director of health, confirmed on Wednesday afternoon the latest data, which took the division’s death toll to 896 and the total number of cases to 47,878.
According to official data, between Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, eight Covid-19 patients died in Khulna district under the division, seven in Jhenaidah, five in Chuadanga, four in Kushtia, three in Bagerhat, two in Meherpur and one each in Jessore, Satkhira and Narail districts.
Of the total 896 deceased, the highest 228 were from Khulna district, 166 from Kustia, 114 from Jessore, 79 from Chuadanga, 75 from Jhenidah, 73 from Bagerhat, 63 from Satkhira, 37 from Meherpur, 36 from Narail, and 25 from Magura district.

Of the total 47,878 cases, the highest 13,569 were from Khulna district, 10,159 from Jessore, 6,662 from Kustia, 3,638 from Jhenidah, 3,062 from Satkhira, 2,796 from Chuadanga, 2,752 from Bagerhat, 2,371 from Narail, and 1,448 from Meherpur district.
Also, 35,175 patients have also recovered across the division while a total of 6,075 patients are still undergoing treatment at different designated hospitals.
The bordering division had detected its first Covid-19 case in Chuadanga district on March 19 last year.
Meanwhile, in the wake of the surge in cases and deaths, the Khulna district administration imposed stricter restrictions on public movement and gathering in the city and across the district for a week from Tuesday.
However, the first two days of the lockdown saw a random breach of the restrictions on public movement and gathering.
Shops were seen open in many city areas, with some streets experiencing a notable rush of traffic.
Most of the public transports were carrying passengers at full capacity.
People were seen gossiping at tea stalls, having food at eateries, and smoking cigarettes outside. Most of them were not wearing any masks.
Many hawkers and street vendors were also out on the streets to sell daily essentials among various other products.
Police had set up bamboo barricades at various important points of Khulna city but were finding it hard to control public movement. They were seen patrolling the roads and sentencing different terms to people for flouting the lockdown rules and not wearing masks.
