Rajshahi hospital records 13 Covid-related deaths in 24 hours

125 people have died at the hospital’s Covid-19 unit in 13 days

A total of 13 people died at the Covid-19 unit of Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) in a 24-hour period till Sunday morning.

Six of the deceased had tested positive for Covid-19, while the rest were showing symptoms consistent with the infectious disease.

Of the deceased, six were from Chapainawabganj district, three from Naogaon, two from Rajshahi and one each from Kushtia and Natore, said RMCH Director Brigadier General Shameem Yazdani.

Altogether 125 people have died at the hospital’s Covid-19 unit from 8am on June 1 till 8am on June 13. Seventy of them had tested positive for the disease.

With the admission of 42 new patients, 294 people are currently undergoing treatment at the Covid-19 unit, slightly above the capacity of 271 beds.

“Additional patients are being given medical attention by increasing the number of beds,” said the hospital director.

Twenty-seven of the newly admitted patients are from Rajshahi district, seven from Chapainawabganj, five from Naogaon and three from Natore.

Eighteen people are currently undergoing treatment at the hospital’s ICU.

The Rajshahi district administration on Thursday announced a strict lockdown from 5pm on Friday till June 17 in light of the worsening Covid-19 situation in the area.

During the shutdown, all public transports and shops in the district will remain closed excluding emergency and medical services.

Besides, passenger train services between Rajshahi and other parts of the country were also suspended, reports UNB.
