A protest erupted at Hathazari Madrasa against the eldest son of Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh chief Shah Ahmed Shafi.
A group of students staged the raging protests on Wednesday to press home their six-point demand including removal of Anas Madani who is also the Publicity Secretary of Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh.
According to the local sources, several hundred students began the protest after Zohr prayer and chanted slogans demanding the removal of Anas Madani from the madrasa.
Anas Madani is now serving as the assistant director of the educational institution.
The protesters are known to be followers of Hefazat Secretary-General Junayed Babunagari.
The dispute has come to the fore when Babunagari was removed from the post of assistant director of the madrasa in June of this year.
On information, the police rushed to the spot and tried to bring the situation under control.
At one stage, the protesting students took position on Chittagong-Khagrachhari road in front of the madrasa.
However, the police dispersed the protesting students from the thoroughfare.
The locals said that the protests were staged as a sequel to the long-running dispute.
The protesting students also went on a rampage and vandalized some rooms of the madrasa.
Despite repeated attempts, Anas Madani could not be reached over phone for his comment.
Shah Ahmed Shafi is the rector of Al-Jamiatul Ahlia Darul Ulum Moinul Islam, also known as Hathazari Madrasa.
He is also the chairman of Befaqul Madarisil Arabia Bangladesh.
