Hefazat-e-Islam Ameer Muhibullah Babunagari has said Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami would “destroy the country” if it comes to power, saying that voting for the party is not “permissible” for Muslims.
He made the remarks while addressing a program at Kajirhat Boro Madrasa in Fatikchhari Upazila, organized to mark the completion of the recitation of Bukhari Sharif on Thursday evening.
Speaking in the regional Chittagong dialect, Babunagari said: “I do not consider this an election; it is a jihad. If this group comes to power, it will destroy Bangladesh. Jamaat-e-Islami is not true Islam; it has no connection with the Islam of Madinah—they promote Maududi’s version of Islam.”
He also said Jamaat-e-Islami does not observe hijab despite Quranic injunctions, and alleged that the party would uproot the foundation of Islam and harm the Muslim community if it gains power.
At the event, Babunagari also expressed support for Sarwar Alamgir, the BNP-nominated candidate for the Chittagong-2 (Fatikchhari) constituency.
Pointing to Sarwar Alamgir, he said: “We are not voting for him; we are waging jihad through him—against Moududi’s Jamaat.”
Senior Islamic scholars, including Maulana Habibur Rahman Qasemi, principal of Nazirhat Boro Madrasa, were also present at the program.
