A suspected cattle thief was lynched by a mob in Shekher Maria village in Nondigram upazila of Bogra in the early hours of Friday.
The deceased, Ujjal Hossain, 35, son of late Naimuddin, had cases filed against him for theft and attempted murder, said police and local sources.
Locals said four people tried to steal a cow from a cowshed past midnight, when the owner detected their presence and screamed. The owner and his neighbours chased the four. Three of the thieves managed to flee but Ujjal got caught and was beaten to death.
Bhatra Union Parishad Chairman Morshedul Bari said cattle theft has increased in Shekher Maria village over the past one and a half month.
Nondigram police station Officer-in-Charge Shawkat Kabir said: "The body has been sent to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy. We will accept a case if it is filed by the victim's family. Otherwise the police will file the case as complainant."
