A man was beaten to death by a mob in Barisal city on allegations of attempted rape on a 4-year-old.
The incident took place on Saturday night on Dhan Gobeshona Institute Road under Barisal City Corporation.
Sub-Inspector Hamidul Islam of Barisal Kotwali Police said that the accused, Md Sujan, 24, was severely injured in the mob attack.
When local residents handed him over to the police, he was admitted to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital on Saturday night.
While undergoing treatment, he passed away after 8pm.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mizanur Rahman of Kotwali police station said that the girl’s mother filed a case of attempted rape against the accused on Friday night.
According to the case statement, the accused lived near the girl’s house and worked as an autorickshaw driver.
On Friday night, he was watching television in his ground-floor room, leaving the door open.
At that time, the child entered the room to watch TV, upon which he locked the door and attempted to rape her.
Hearing her cries for help, residents rescued the child.
On Saturday night, the accused was spotted in the area, where local residents severely beat him.
The deceased’s body has been sent to the Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.
