The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has said efforts are ongoing to arrest those still involved in the killing of Tofazzal, a mentally unstable youth, who was beaten to death at Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall of Dhaka University (DU).
DMP Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Talebur Rahman said this at a press conference at DMP’s Media Center on Monday at 11am.
He said: “Tofazzal Hossain died after being assaulted in the guest room of Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall on September 18. On September 19, the police arrested six students in connection with the incident. They gave confessional statements in court. The DU administration has expelled eight students found to be involved in the incident.”
Talebur Rahman added: "From the beginning, police have been actively engaged in the incident at Dhaka University. After the case was filed, senior officials visited the scene. The body was examined, an autopsy was conducted, and the body was handed over to the family."
He said: “In this case, the DU administration handed over six students to us. They were arrested and presented before the court, where they confessed. The DU administration has informed us of some findings, and we are in communication with them. Efforts to arrest the others involved are ongoing. If our investigation finds the involvement of any more individuals, legal action will be taken against them. We are investigating the case with the utmost priority."
When asked about police officers absent from their posts, Talebur Rahman stated: “We are bound by certain laws and regulations. There are rules in place for employment. If anyone is absent without permission, departmental action is taken according to employment regulations.”
In response to another question, the DMP spokesperson said: “Out of 22 police stations in Dhaka, some have been partially or fully destroyed, with 216 establishments in total being damaged. We are trying to restore the situation quickly by repairing the damages.”
Regarding looted weapons from the DMP, he said: “Since many establishments have been damaged, we have not yet gathered complete information. Work is ongoing, and once it's finished, we will provide full details.”
