A college student was arrested in Sirajganj on Monday reportedly for making "deregatory" remarks about Islam on social media.
The accused Srabon Haldar, is a first year student of Dhaka's Bir Shreshtha Noor Mohammad Public College, hailing from Gobindashi village of Bhuapur upazila in Tangail.
Confirming the arrest, Bhuapur police station Officer-in-Charge Rashidul Islam said Srabon is accused of making derogatory remarks about Islam in a post made at one of his friend's group on Facebook.
Local Muslims in Gobindashi village vandalized Srabon's house on Monday after Srabon's friends spread the post on Facebook, sources said. Shortly before the attack, realizing that such an incident may happen, Srabon's family left their house.
Chase and counter chase took place between police and local Muslims when police intervened that day.
The situation was brought under control after Tangail Additional Superintendent of Police Shafiqul Islam, Bhuapur Upazila Nirbahi Officer Nasrin Parvin, OC Rashidul and a few others went to the spot and assured the agitated people that the accused would be brought to book.
Denying the allegations, Srabon said he had made no such comments and his Facebook account may have been hacked.
