The water level of the Jamuna River has been rising above the danger level, three times more in the last 24 hours, worsening the flood situation in Jamalpur and adjacent areas.
According to the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) Jamalpur branch, the water level is flowing 54cm above the danger level on Sunday around 11am, which was 18cm on Saturday, waterlogging thousands of people of the area.
“The flood left at least 20,00 people of 15 unions of four upazilas marooned,” said Abdul Mannan, gauge reader of BWDB.
“The road transportation of the area has been severely affected, as the Mandal Bazar road link, and Islampur-Uliya-Mahmudpur road were waterlogged by the flood,” said the officer.
Crop fields in Belgachha, Kulkandi, Sapdhori of Islampur upazila, Badhadurabad of Dewanganj upazila are also underwater, said the farmers of the area.
“The water level in the Jamuna and Brahmaputra is alarmingly rising up but BWDB is prepared to fight the calamity,” said Md Abu Syed, executive engineer BWDB.
