A member of Ward No 5 under Kuhalong union in Bandarban Sadar upazila has been shot dead.
The incident took place on Monday evening in Bakichhara area of the union, said locals and police.
Authorities identified the deceased as Chain Sahla Marma, 38.
Quoting locals, Kuhalong union parishad Chairman Sanupru Marma said an unidentified group of armed youths called him out of his house and shot him in the waist. Then they fled the scene immediately.
He was rushed to Bandarban Sadar Hospital, from where he was referred to Chittagong Medical College Hospital after his condition deteriorated.
Abul Kalam, member of Ward No 4, said that Chain Sahla Marma died in Patia area on the way to Chittagong.
Sadar police station OC Shahidul Alam Chowdhury said: “The identities of the miscreants are not yet known. We are investigating.”
However, local said, there have been long-running clashes between the Chittagong Hill Tracts Jana Sanghati Samiti (JSS) and the Magh party in Kuhalang union. Some said the murder may have been a result of that.
